Trane AC Not Cooling: A Troubleshooting Guide

Trane is one of the most commonly installed HVAC systems across Chicago and the suburbs, known for heavier-gauge cabinets built to withstand harsh Midwest winters. But when your Trane AC runs but doesn't cool during a summer heat wave, diagnosing the issue quickly can save you hundreds in emergency service fees and prevent food spoilage or uncomfortable nights. This guide walks through the most common causes we see in the field and what you can check before calling for service.

1. Check the Thermostat First

Before inspecting the outdoor unit, confirm your thermostat is set to "cool" mode and the target temperature is at least 3–5 degrees below the current indoor reading. A thermostat inadvertently switched to "fan only" will circulate air without triggering the compressor, so the system runs but produces no cold air. If you have a programmable or smart thermostat, check that the schedule hasn't defaulted to an energy-saving setting that limits cooling during peak hours.

Also verify the thermostat has power — dead batteries or a tripped breaker can cause intermittent or complete loss of control. If your Trane system is paired with a newer digital thermostat and you recently had electrical work done, double-check that the C-wire (common wire) is properly connected, as missing or loose C-wires are a frequent cause of sporadic thermostat behavior in older Chicago homes that have been retrofitted with modern controls.

2. Inspect the Outdoor Condenser Unit

Trane condensers are built with heavy-duty cabinets, but that same durability can make it harder to visually inspect components without removing panels. Start by confirming the outdoor unit is receiving power — look for the disconnect box near the condenser and ensure the pull-out fuse or breaker inside is fully seated. If the fan is spinning but the compressor isn't running (you'll hear a distinct hum or feel vibration when the compressor engages), the issue is likely a failed capacitor or a compressor starting component rather than refrigerant loss.

Check for debris blocking airflow — cottonwood seed, leaves, and grass clippings are common culprits in Chicago suburbs during late spring and summer. A condenser coil caked with debris will cause the system to run continuously without cooling effectively, and in some cases can trigger a high-pressure safety switch that shuts the compressor down entirely. Gently rinse the coil from the inside out with a garden hose (never a pressure washer, which can bend fins), and clear at least 18 inches of clearance around all sides of the unit.

3. Listen for Unusual Sounds

A Trane AC that hums loudly but doesn't cool often points to a locked compressor or failed start capacitor. If you hear a clicking sound every few minutes without the compressor kicking on, the system is likely attempting to start but can't complete the cycle — this is a classic capacitor symptom and one of the most common AC repairs we perform during Chicago's first heat wave each June.

Grinding, squealing, or metal-on-metal sounds coming from the condenser usually indicate a failing fan motor or worn bearings. While the compressor may still function, a seized fan motor will prevent proper heat exchange and cause the system to overheat and shut down on safety, leaving you with intermittent cooling that worsens as outdoor temperatures climb throughout the day.

4. Check for Frozen Evaporator Coils

If your Trane AC is running but blowing warm or room-temperature air, the indoor evaporator coil may be frozen. Turn the system off and switch the fan to "on" mode to circulate air and help the ice melt — do not attempt to chip or scrape ice off the coil, as this can puncture refrigerant lines. Frozen coils are usually caused by restricted airflow (dirty filter, blocked return vents) or low refrigerant, and the system should not be restarted until the coil is fully thawed and the underlying cause is identified.

A clogged or improperly sized air filter is the most common cause of frozen coils we see in Chicago-area homes. If you haven't changed your filter in more than 90 days, or if you're using a high-MERV filter without confirming your blower can handle the airflow restriction, this is the first thing to address. After the coil thaws, replace the filter, restore power, and monitor the system for 24 hours — if the coil refreezes, the issue is likely low refrigerant or a failing blower motor that requires a technician.

5. Refrigerant Leaks and When to Call a Pro

Low refrigerant is one of the most misunderstood AC issues among homeowners. Refrigerant is a closed-loop system — it doesn't "run out" like fuel. If your Trane AC is low on refrigerant, there's a leak somewhere in the line set, evaporator coil, or condenser coil. Simply recharging the system without locating and repairing the leak will result in the same issue returning within weeks or months, and repeated refrigerant loss can damage the compressor, turning a $300 repair into a $2,000+ system replacement.

Signs of refrigerant loss include ice buildup on the outdoor line set, hissing sounds near the condenser or air handler, or an AC that cools intermittently and weakens as the day progresses. Refrigerant handling requires EPA certification, so this is never a DIY repair. Most refrigerant leaks we diagnose in Chicago-area Trane systems occur at brazed joints or in the evaporator coil, and repair costs typically range from $150 to $600 depending on leak location and whether the coil itself needs replacement.
