Samsung Dryer Not Heating: What's Usually Wrong

1. Heating element (electric dryers)

The heating element in an electric Samsung dryer is a coil that glows red-hot to warm the air circulating through the drum. Over time, the coil develops weak spots or breaks entirely, especially if the dryer has been run with clogged venting — restricted airflow causes the element to overheat and fail prematurely. When the element breaks, the drum will still turn and air will still circulate, but the air stays room temperature no matter how long the cycle runs. The element itself is accessible from the rear or lower front panel depending on the model year, and replacing it takes about 30–45 minutes once the correct part is confirmed. If you notice the dryer takes longer and longer to dry loads before it stops heating entirely, that's the classic sign of an aging element that's about to fail.

2. Thermal fuse and thermal cutoff

Samsung dryers use one-time thermal fuses and resettable thermal cutoff switches as safety devices to prevent overheating fires. The thermal fuse is a small component mounted on the blower housing or heating element assembly that blows permanently if the dryer gets too hot, cutting power to the heating circuit even though the drum continues to turn. The thermal cutoff is similar but can reset once the dryer cools down, though repeated tripping usually means the fuse has already blown. Both devices fail most often when venting is clogged or kinked, forcing hot air to recirculate inside the dryer cabinet rather than exhausting outdoors. Clearing the vent and replacing the blown fuse restores heat, but if the underlying airflow restriction isn't fixed, the new fuse will blow again within a few cycles. Chicago's humid summers and long dryer runs on heavy bedding and towels make clogged venting one of the most common root causes we see.

3. Gas igniter and valve coils (gas dryers)

In gas Samsung dryers, the igniter glows white-hot to open the gas valve and light the burner. An aging igniter will glow dimly or not at all, which prevents the valve from opening and leaves the dryer running cold. The igniter is a fragile ceramic component that weakens over time, and most fail after 5–8 years of regular use. Replacing the igniter is straightforward once the burner assembly is accessed, usually through the lower front panel. If the igniter glows bright but the burner doesn't light, the gas valve coils may be failing instead — these are the electromagnets that hold the valve open once the igniter signals it's hot enough. Both the igniter and the valve coils are relatively inexpensive parts, but confirming which one has failed requires observing the igniter's behavior during a heat cycle, which is why most repairs are diagnosed on-site rather than over the phone.

4. Cycling thermostat and high-limit thermostat

The cycling thermostat controls when the heating element or gas burner turns on and off to maintain the selected temperature, while the high-limit thermostat cuts power if the dryer exceeds safe temperatures. If the cycling thermostat fails in the open position, the heating circuit never completes and the dryer won't heat at all. If it fails closed, the dryer may overheat and trip the high-limit or thermal fuse. Testing these thermostats requires a multimeter to check for continuity at room temperature and at elevated temperatures, which is part of a standard no-heat diagnostic. Both thermostats are mounted on or near the heating element assembly and are relatively inexpensive to replace, but misdiagnosing a cycling thermostat when the real issue is a blown thermal fuse or weak igniter wastes time and money, so proper testing order matters.

5. When to check venting before assuming a part failure

Before replacing any heating component, check the dryer vent and exhaust duct for clogs, kinks, or excessive length. A dryer that takes two or three cycles to dry a single load is often fighting restricted airflow rather than a failed heating element — the element may still be working, but the hot, moist air has nowhere to go and just recirculates inside the drum. Chicago homes with long vent runs to the exterior, especially those routed through multiple floors or tight basement spaces, are prone to lint buildup that chokes airflow over time. Clearing the vent can restore normal drying performance without any parts replacement, and it prevents the thermal fuse from blowing again after a repair. If your Samsung dryer's vent exits through a side wall or roof rather than a ground-level exterior wall, expect more frequent lint buildup because gravity works against the airflow, and plan to have the duct cleaned every 12–18 months rather than waiting for a no-heat failure.
