Furnace Tune-Up Checklist: What to Do Before Chicago Winter Hits

For homes with pets, remodeling dust, or heavy HVAC use, check the filter every 30 days instead of waiting for a seasonal schedule.
Once the filter is fresh, turn the thermostat to heat mode and confirm that air is flowing from every register in the home. Weak airflow from specific rooms can indicate a duct blockage or damper setting rather than a furnace issue, and identifying that now avoids confusion later when the system is running under load.
2. Inspect the Igniter and Burner Flames
Modern gas furnaces use a hot-surface igniter or electronic spark ignition instead of a standing pilot light. If the furnace clicks but doesn't light, or if it lights and then shuts off within seconds, the igniter is the most common culprit. Igniters weaken over time and eventually crack, which is why they're one of the most frequently replaced parts during a pre-winter tune-up.
Once the burners light, the flames should be steady and blue with minimal yellow. A yellow or flickering flame can indicate a burner that needs cleaning or a more serious combustion air issue. If you see yellow flames or smell gas when the furnace is running, shut the system off at the thermostat and call for service immediately — any gas smell should be treated as urgent.
3. Test the Thermostat and Safety Switches
Set your thermostat a few degrees higher than the current room temperature and confirm that the furnace cycles on within a minute or two. If the thermostat shows a call for heat but the furnace doesn't respond, check that the thermostat is set to "heat" mode (not "cool" or "off") and that the fan setting is on "auto" rather than "on" — leaving the fan setting on "on" can make it seem like the system is running when it's only circulating air without heating.
Modern furnaces have multiple safety switches that will prevent ignition if airflow is blocked, the flue is obstructed, or the condensate drain is clogged. A tune-up inspection confirms that all of these safety interlocks are functioning correctly, which prevents mid-winter shutdowns when the system is running for hours at a time.
4. Carbon Monoxide Safety Check
A cracked heat exchanger or blocked flue can allow carbon monoxide to enter the home instead of venting safely outdoors. Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless, so a working CO detector is essential in any home with a gas furnace, and the detector should be replaced every 5–7 years even if it's still chirping normally.
During a professional tune-up, the technician will inspect the heat exchanger for visible cracks, test the flue draft to confirm proper venting, and measure combustion gases to confirm safe operation. These checks can't be done reliably without diagnostic tools, which is why a pre-winter tune-up is more thorough than a homeowner visual inspection alone.
5. Efficiency Check and System Age
A furnace that's 15 years old or more is approaching the end of its typical service life, even if it's still producing heat. Older systems are less efficient, more expensive to heat a home, and more likely to need mid-winter emergency repairs when replacement parts become harder to source. If your furnace was installed before 2010, ask the technician to estimate remaining service life and whether a planned replacement in the next 1–2 years makes more sense than continuing to repair an aging system.
